Golden rules for data cabinet patching

by | Cabling guide

A tidy data cabinet doesn’t just look good, it has these benefit:

  • Changes are easier land mistakes are less likely.
  • Problems can be diagnosed faster.
  • Airflow and cooling are improved.
  • Reduced risk of damage to cables.

Here are the golden rules for a well-organised data cabinet:

  • All the panels must be clearly and accurately labelled.
  • Patch cables should be the correct length to strained on the connectors and excess cable bulk.
  • Patch cables should be neatly routed to the sides then fed up or down the sides of the cabinet.
  • Keep the areas in front of the panels as clear as possible.
  • Don’t have tight cable bends on the rear of the connectors.
  • If you have space, use horizontal cable organisers to route the patch cables though.
  • It’s not essential, but different colour cables can indicate the zone they’re feeding or the service they’re providing.
  • Use a grade of cable at least as good as your installed cabling. For example, this might be Cat6 or Cat6a.
  • Keep your cabinet locked to deter tampering.
  • Inspect your cabinet regularly and ensure it’s still organised and tidy.
